“She might get us a tavern yet. If we’re going to be stuck here for the night, we could do with ale.”

Yosaku shivered. “Reminds me of Dragon’s Mist when we first built it. All village and no population.”

“Wait a minute.” Connor narrowed his eyes, trying to make out what he was seeing. It looked like a shadow, but fuzzy. A dark speck that was getting closer all the time. “Is that a man, a beast, what?”

“Whatever it is, it’s coming from the mountains and marching at quite the pace.”

“The notification said there was one knight alive, and that it was being drawn back to the stronghold. Must be him.”

“Looks like some kind of beast rather than a man. How do we know if it’s the knight or some monster?” Yosaku parked her sword under her arm and crouched. She looked casual, but Connor knew she was assessing the creature’s every move for any characteristic she could take advantage of. She smirked. “He’s heavy-footed—power over prowess. Has leather armor, but with some kind of metal or stone inlay. Advanced, but not overly so.”

“Early token stuff?” Connor remembered back to his first days in Devon where he had to collect tokens simply to craft a pair of pants. “How do you know it’s a he?”

“Please. A woman wouldn’t give away every aspect of her fighting style by lumbering up like a bear. Only a man has to assert his masculinity that way. He practically oozes testosterone.”

“He’s coming in quick. Hardly lumbering.”

“He’s lumbering all right. Look at all the snow he’s kicking up.”

Long, brown fur covered the creature’s face, and the hair along his crown he wore swept back into a high ponytail. The creature’s facial hair was drawn, braided, and plaited. He—assuming it was a he—had a protruding box-like jaw, a little apelike, but somehow much wilder, much fiercer. A white-fur pelt covered his broad shoulders, falling to a long coat and knee length boots. He held a khopesh in one hand, and a short spear in the other.

“Looks strong. I wonder how they were all overrun.” Connor readied himself for the forthcoming fight. Yosaku remained crouched; only a slight bobbing of her heels gave away her preparedness.

Like a coiled spring ready to explode, Yosaku withdrew her nagamaki from under her shoulder and rested it on her knees. She clasped her hands behind her back. Her eyes never left the knight as he closed the remaining distance, then stopped ten yards away.

“Do you understand me?” the beast asked. His voice was exact, educated, no hint of the barbarian that stood before them. His voice had a hollow feel, and his opening salvo told Connor that his real words had been run through some kind of translator.

“I do,” Connor replied.

“Good. I wondered how it worked. You’re the first to reach this far. I assume you’re a lord. The others tried, but they died.”

“You killed them?”

The beast stiffened, but still held the khopesh loosely at his side. “No. I was fortunate, but not now. You calling me back here has ended my luck.
